BUSINESS DIVISIONS

Mail

The MAIL division transports letters and parcels within Germany and specializes in dialog marketing and the distribution of press products. We deliver approximately 72 million letters and 2.5 million parcels every day, six days a week. If posted in time, well over 90% of all letters reach their recipients the very next day. We also provide international mail and communications services with direct connections to more than 200 countries worldwide. And we offer integrated services for corporate communications.

First Packstation to serve German soldiers
Single households account for more than half of all addresses in cities, but typically they are not available to accept normal deliveries. So are those serving in the German armed forces. Deutsche Post has now installed the first PACKSTATION on an armed forces base to enable German servicemen to post and pick up their parcels outside of normal opening hours.

DHL Express

Fleet modernisation
Through the use of the most modern engine and wing technology we are increasing the efficiency and environmental friendliness of our international air network. As for example with our new Boeing 777 we are 16,6 time below the regulatory noise emissions.

OUR INNOVATIONS

Deutsche Post DHL actively promotes innovative applications and technologies in the logistics industry. The DHL Innovation Center plays a key role in doing precisely this. It is the development and communication platform of the Deutsche Post DHL Group. Together with customers, employees and partners from economy, science and technology the future of the logistics industry is shaped here.

The Cold Chain
DHL Freight's Europe-wide cold chain was developed to handle pharmaceutical companies' temperature-sensitive shipments. These specialised solutions combine a fleet of refrigerated trucks with a network of temperature-controlled distribution hubs.

Environmental-friendly technologies

The DHL Innovation Center is responsible for green technologies in the fields of vehicles and buildings. It explores alternative technologies and fuels to be used in the Group's fleet. The innovative solutions and technologies for "green" logistics are integrated with the central climate protection program GoGreen and thus promote the improvement of the CO2 efficiency of the entire Group.

Parcel Robot
An innovative system, especially conceived for the automatic unloading of containers loaded with parcels. The robot grabs - controlled by specially designed software and a laser scanner - the parcels in the container, lifts them and places them on a conveyor belt which takes the packages to the logistics center.

Intelligent Shipment

We actively research on RFID (radiofrequency identification) and we promote its standardization to ensure and drive forward a harmonized launch of RFID at Deutsche Post DHL. Furthermore we offer customized RFID solutions for our customers from various industries e.g. retail, consumer electronics and fashion.

Robot Cell Light
Until recently, the only option for unloading involved removing parcels from the pallets by hand, meaning that the individual packages had to be separated from each other and placed on a conveyor belt. These stereotypical turning and lifting movements can now be taken over by the Robot Cell Light.

Intelligent Delivery

In our pilot project SmartTruck we test intelligent delivery vehicles for optimized tour planning and usage of vehicle capacity. This way, we improve cost and CO2 efficiency and get even better in offering our customers time critical pick-up and delivery services.

SmartTruck
DHL is combining advanced technology with dynamic route planning in its vehicles. "SmartTruck" uses radiofrequency identification (RFID) and a completely new type of route planning software, which navigates express vehicles and other vehicle away from inner city traffic jams.

Shipment Monitoring

With SmartSensor Temperature we offer transport with seamless temperature monitoring along the supply chain without opening your shipment. The temperature information is fed to the SmartSensor web portal, where you can access at all times -from anywhere- for quality control purposes.

Metro Cash & Carry
Started as a joint project and running since 2008, the system at Metro Cash & Carry is the first comprehensive application of RFID in consumer goods logistics in France. Together with DHL, the company is purchasing the vision of an digital supply chain, with the aim of further step-by step expansion.

Research

The DHL Innovation Center collaborates with internal and external partners on trend-setting projects. We realize concrete technological innovations with the corporate divisions of the Group. In addition, the DHL Innovation Center takes an active part in research projects and thus reinforces Deutsche Post DHL's role as a pioneer in logistics.

Semantic Product Memory (SemProM)
Within the scope of this joint research initiative, Deutsche Post DHL evaluates new technologies for the Internet of Things and the use of Smart Labels for various transport objects in the field of logistics. The goal is the development of innovative solutions and services for the customer.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The Group has made its commitment to environmental and social issues a part of its corporate strategy, dedicating its resources to programs in the areas of environment, education and disaster management.

Social responsibility

As a United Nations partner, Deutsche Post DHL provides logistical support to relief organizations on the ground when a natural disaster strikes. Our global disaster relief network is made up of three Disaster Response Teams. Environmental responsibility

Our climate protection program GoGreen has made Deutsche Post DHL the first logistics sector company to set a concrete carbon efficiency goal, which is to achieve a 30% improvement in its CO2 efficiency by the year 2020. This means implementing measures in each and every division, such as fleet optimization for both aircraft and ground vehicles, and expanding our range of carbon-neutral, climate-friendly GOGREEN products and services.

Experience helps in Myanmar
Cyclone Nargis affected 2.4 million people in the Irrawaddy Delta region of Myanmar in May 2008. Our Disaster Response Teams of 11 volunteers from Bangladesh, Singapore, and Malaysia worked closely with UN representatives to accept and inventory the shipments, store the goods correctly, and ensure that approximately 2,200 tones of aid were ready for the relief agencies to take to communities in the Delta region.

New Diesel from Renewable Energy Sources
10 series-produced Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses that run exclusively on sustainably produced renewable diesel have been in service under everyday conditions in Germany. The vehicles have already covered one million kilometers. Field test shows, emissions of nitrogen oxides decrease up to 15% and the CO2 emissions of the fuel used in the pilot test have been reduced by more than 60% compared to fossil fuels.
